Chapter Seventeen

Paxton

My elbows lean on our kitchen counter tense as a board and dripping with the sweat I earned at training this afternoon. I was staring down the hall awaiting Austin’s return from dropping Hendrix at her dorm after practice, and patience wasn’t something that came easily to me.

Not since I met a certain raven-haired beauty anyway.

My breath held as I awaited the usual sound of his footsteps echoing in the hall. This farce that I’d asked him to do for me with Hendrix was absolutely killing me. More than I thought it would. The more time I’m with her the more I know how far I’m willing to go to keep her. It’s a blessing that I’m in a position to be able to have her watching me at practice but it’s more than hard knowing that I can’t go to her or touch her the way I want to.

The way I crave.

The stares and gossip about my girl and my best friend I can handle, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t grating on me having to watch him drape himself over her. Having to watch him drive her in his car, or even walk her to her dorm, when those are the things that I should be experiencing with her. I know it sounds like I’m being soft, but now that I’d had her it was like I was close to her but not close enough. I didn’t want to keep having to watch myself, or my behaviour. I did that enough in this bullshit world as it was and I didn’t want to have to do with her too. Austin’s already berated me more than once about how I can’t keep my eyes off her and that someone is bound to notice, and then some red-headed senior Banks had falling over him at training today blatantly asked Austin if he cared that his bff seemed to be obsessed with his girl. It was an amateur move for someone raised the way I was but the truth of it was – I didn’t fucking care as much as I should have. I couldn’t help but watch her and look out for her, because she was mine to look after. She was mine to care for.

She was mine to love.

Which means I needed to get everything else moving along real fast, so I can have her where I know I needed her.

Beside me.

When I hear the click of the door, I can’t stop the acidic tone in my voice as I call to him.

“It’s about fucking time.”

He doesn’t respond, but as the footsteps get closer, my back straightens from the counter. My eyes narrow. The dim sound of a heel on our floor is definitely not from Austin’s trainer.

“I didn’t realise you’d be expecting me. Son.”

I stand to my full height with my arms fisted by my sides, and thankfully hidden by our counter, as I stare ahead at my father in his grey suit tailored to perfection, and hiding the devil I know lurked inside of it.
